Birth Control on the Cob?

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

The great controversy of so-called “frankenfoods” continues. Results from an Austrian study have just been released showing that laboratory mice fed genetically modified corn (specifically, a variety created by Monsanto) had decreased fertility compared to mice fed on conventional corn. And why didn’t any food regulating agencies catch this? Because in the United States, no long-term testing is required for genetically modified foods to enter the market.

Monsanto, of course, refutes the study, reminding us that it hasn’t yet been peer-reviewed, but they do promise to examine it in more detail. After all, this was a serious study funded by the Austrian Ministry of Health, Families, and Youth.

I think we can all agree that genetically modified crops need further research from all sides before being fed to us wholesale.

At the very least, I want to know when something I am considering buying has GMO in it. We have a poor food labeling and tracking system in this country.
