DIY Shampoo Recipe

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

I’m a hopeless DIYer. If there’s a way I can make something myself, I’m bound to try it. My latest favorite has been making my own shampoo. I was at the health food store expressing my frustration about how I have such a hard time finding the right shampoo for my hair when a clerk gave me this simple recipe.

The basic ingredients are:

- 3/4 cup of Castille soap (Dr. Bronner’s works great).

- 1 cup of strong rosemary tea (or 1 cup of water and 10 drops of rosemary essential oil).

Really. That’s it. If you use rosemary tea, the mix will stay fresh for about two weeks (longer if you keep it in the fridge).

Rosemary, along with green tea, has been used for centuries by Asian women to achieve shiny hair. I can vouch for that – my hair is shinier than ever. This shampoo is also known to stimulate hair growth, heal dandruff and add an aromatherapy touch.

Update: I’ve been using this recipe for a while and here’s my review: I notice my hair doesn’t get as “squeaky clean” as with regular shampoo, because Dr. Bronner’s has natural oils in it. So there’s always a little residue on my hair, and that can be strange when I’ve been so used to squeaky clean hair all my life. But, my hair is soft and shiny and I certainly don’t think a little extra oil is bad. I don’t think it’s good for your hair to strip away the oils all the time. The oils should be washed, of course, but not stripped away. Anyway, that’s my two cents on this. :)

I love Dr. Bronners! You can try a vinegar rinse, 1 part vinegar to 4 parts water (or herbal tea) to keep it from getting that build up feeling. Thanks for sharing!!

so far so good, just tried this (although I used jasmine green tea) and I did the vinegar rinse as suggested by Tracy. So much better than straight bronner’s.
