Ahead of the Eco Curve?

Apparently, what’s old is new again. One of our fellow green sites praises modal, a fabric made from the bio-based fibers spun from beech trees, a renewable resource that doesn’t require pesticides. It’s soft, it’s sleek, it doesn’t pill, fade, or shrink ““ blah, blah, blah. I learned about modal quite a long time ago when I was first “going green", so I was confused to see the fabric referred to as up-and-coming.
It’s not just me being ahead of the eco curve here: a fabric routinely used by fast fashion mass-retailers like Forever 21 and La Redoute isn’t exactly emerging, in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not knocking modal. I actually quite like the fabric. It has great stretch and drape, similar to bamboo. I just want to set the record straight so you know: it’s no new invention. Okay, I’m done.

Hmmm, modal, that sounds lovely. Beech trees have a very soft vibration, so I’d enjoy wearing their fabrics. But only if they are respectfully and sustainably harvested. Trees are sentient beings, after all.

I admit, I was surprised when I saw that, as well. On the other hand, it’s a good thing, I suppose, that fast fashion outlets are using sustainable fabrics.
Thanks for a great post, Allison.
