Green Your TV (No, Really)

WP Greet Box icon
Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

Everything really is going green. I suppose it was only a matter of time before producers came up with another idea for reality shows and home makeover editions. Don’t get me wrong ““ I’m not knocking Discovery Communications’ new Planet Green channel, which airs green lifestyle programming 24/7. I’m just wondering how many spins they can put on eco-sensitizing your life before becoming kitschy (or desperate).

With program names such as the G Word, Supper Club, Renovation Nation, and Mean Green Machines, these shows will be fun to watch once, but will enough people keep tuning in? Personally, I’ll stick to my online sources (ahem, EcoSalon). <a href ="http://answers.polldaddy.com/poll/717673/" >Is Planet Green for You?</a> <br/> <span style="font-size:9px;"> (<a href ="http://www.polldaddy.com"> polls</a>)</span>

I’m just glad there’s more green awareness. But as someone who rarely watches TV anyway, I can’t say I’ll be tuning in much!

I agree with Sara – it’s definitely great to spread the green – but so far, I’m not impressed. Time will tell.

It’s a good idea if it’s in small, well-crafted doses. But if it goes down the News24 road (ie. the same amount of content, but diluted to fill an entire day, and filled with endless repitition) then that’s….well, bad news.

So those of you who have been watching, what works and what doesn’t?

I think the Green Movement should be more in the media. Think about how much the media plays a role on today’s lifestyle. “If so – and – so goes green, then I should too” is basically what the media wants us to think. If a celebrity does this, then I can do this too.

The celebs are almost as if they are Modern day Gods.

Agreed, Kristi. There needs to be a lot more coverage in the media on sustainable living, alternative energies, and general stories about people who are making it work — green and off the grid. Or whatever, just more positive, happy stories that will inspire us instead of scare us. We need to be shown more examples of what we can do and who we can strive to be!!
