Higher Education Is Getting Smarter

Biking just got more attractive. The Biddeford campus of the University of New England has created a new program to provide free bikes (complete with lock and helmet) or Zipcar usage to Freshmen who leave their cars at home. Because of recent campus construction, many parking spaces were lost and UNE wanted a better solution than simply to lay down more asphalt.
UNE has also expanded shuttle service and offered taxi vouchers for students of the Portland campus. Response has been positive and the university is considering expanding the program. Smart thinking from the Office of Student Affairs; it’s not just good for the environment, but great exercise for students who could use some physical activity between parties ““ and classes.

That sets a great example.
Going further, I’d love to see Universities having funded biking workshops (how to build & modify them) and bike sales, not just for eco reasons but to save students even more cash.

There is a great organization here in Denver that helps you to build a bike for free. In compensation you agree to volunteer for a set number of hours. They also have an all women night where women can come and learn about their bikes, how to fix them etc. in a low stress environment. These are things we need here. Thanks for the article.
