Instant Inexpensive Makeover Tip

One trick I use for refreshing my decor from season to season is simple and inexpensive: paint. It’s easy to repaint a bedroom wall in a bright or soothing hue to frame your bed in style, but don’t stop at walls. Think about painting small furnishings and accent pieces – like lanterns, wood trays, mirrors and screens.
Made from vintage rattan, this Miles screen by Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams has a slightly tropical twist and plenty of eco-friendly appeal. And, with an artistic hand, you can contribute your own personal touch to this gorgeous piece while abiding by your green living standards. Just add a couple of coats of low-VOC paint to brighten this stylish screen. I think coral, pale turquoise or banana yellow would all look great. There are thousands of colors to choose from at sites such as AFM Safecoat, BioShield Paints and Milk Paint to ensure that you’ll find any shade you can imagine. (Available at Ruby Living for $1795.)

Great tip, Tina. I just repainted a chair in glossy black and reupholstered the seat pad with vivid geranium-red fabric. It really pops – and the whole project cost me about $20.
