My Designer Mini Me
Times are tough.
You’re buying more bags of Yukon Gold potatoes than cocktail rings and pulling duds from the back of your drawers you feel indifferent about.
But your kids are more stylish than you of late – and we’ll call it a sign of the times. Parental guilt is striking it rich in the world of kiddie fashion. They have to live through all your public jibber jabber with friends about financial strain.
Besides, if the kids look good, you look good.
In fact, Women’s Wear Daily recently reported that little sizes are turning into big business with Phillip Lim Kids, Little Ella Moss, John Galliano and Little Marc Jacobs among the leading lines. Sustainable lines by Makie, Sarah Waldo, Tess and Tallulah and Green Sleeve (shown) are also leading the mini me world with stylish patterns, tailoring, and bold color taking front and center.
Does this trend treat children as an accessory? Will other parents start eyeing you as strange because your kids look way too good for the playground? Style is as style does and in this current climate, best to stay in the monkey bars’ shadows.

I think it is a good idea to go thru children’s drawers and closets to get in touch of the inventory. Both Mom and the child might be surprised at the treasures they will find or gifts they could make to someone in need.
Maybe a short dress could be turned into a fashionable tunic. A shirt with long sleeves that are now short could turn into a sweet vest. The possibilities are endless. Sewing lessons for Mom could prove to be quite a money saver and blossom some creativity. That’s it for me.

It’s great when parents want their kids to look hip and stylish, just as long as it doesn’t become a hindrance to having fun. It is SO sad to see a parent say “Honey, don’t climb that tree! Don’t play in the sand! Don’t sit on the grass — your clothes might get dirty!”
Kids are kids, after all, and not fashion models.

My pet peeve is when mothers make their daughters dress just like Mommy, or only wear colors the mother likes. I also thought it was a little odd that Sarah Palin bought her younger daughter a Louis Vuitton speedy bag. But hey, maybe it was bootlegged.

i say shop at old navy, kids grow out of that stuff so fast and they spill kool-aid and apple sauce all over everything.
