What Is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. (And it really is simple.) RSS makes enjoying online content easy and convenient.
How Does it Work?
To subscribe to a feed, first you need an RSS reader (feed reader). Bloglines and Newsgator are easy, free RSS readers we recommend. And some web-based email services, like Google’s Gmail, will let you manage your RSS feeds right in your email, bypassing the need for a separate RSS reader.
Is RSS the Same as the Newsletter?
No, they are different, which is why it’s a good idea to try both. The EcoSalon newsletter is a traditional email newsletter. If you’ve ever subscribed to a newsletter, you know that they usually contain a combination of links to that week’s important articles, plus additional tips, deals, and special offers that are not always available on the website. RSS, by contrast, is the website.
For example, if you subscribe to EcoSalon’s décor feed, when EcoSalon publishes a new decor post, your RSS reader will be updated with the new content. What is RSS? explains it this way: “RSS solves a problem for people who regularly use the web. It allows you to easily stay informed by retrieving the latest content from the sites you are interested in. You save time by not needing to visit each site individually.” Simply subscribe (”aggregate”) to your chosen content (”feed”) and go!
