Shoes for a Flat World

Though we know the world is round, from most earthly perspectives, it looks flat. The Terra Plana Company has taken this paradox-in-perspectives as an extended metaphor. “Terra Plana” means flat land, an intentional misnomer highlighting the less-visible truths. Looks flat – but isn’t. Looks clean – but isn’t. And in the case of Terra Plana shoes, they look entirely new – but aren’t.
This 21st century artisan group aims to help by creating cutting-edge footwear. The designs integrate classic shoemaking with modern materials and techniques. With a research department spearheading several new methods of using recycled materials in shoes, Terra Plana helps you navigate the not-so-flat earth with innovative eco-style.
Their Vita ladies shoe is an exemplar of brogue (classic British) shoe detailing made terribly chic. Terra Plana has cultivated a neo-brogue sensibility merged with high-technology comfort and mechanics research.
Recycled hand-stiched quilting is embedded in the shoe, and the patterned panels vary from pair to pair. Each is an original. Complete with lightweight sole, you’ll be treading lightly on the earth in the Vita. (£99)
