Sustainable, Stylish Upholstery – Sans Crunch
In my hunt for eco-friendly fabrics, I was pleased to learn upscale Kravet has introduced a green collection made of 100% recycled polyester.
Kravet’s green line of fabrics are blended from post-industrial and post-consumer fibers, which are woven and treated with water-based products and non-toxic dyes. (And of course, there’s after-life for the fabric: once it wears out, it’s recyclable.)
The best news is that unlike some of the rather crunchy weaves found in many green collections (think after-school craft project), this line is as gorgeous as the textiles Kravet has sold to the trade for nearly a century.
The collection comes in three color palettes: Fire (crimson, scarlet and deep purplish reds); Earth (taupe, rich chocolate and classic charcoal or black); and Ocean (blissful blues and aquas, sandy beiges and greens).
"We’re dedicated to constantly improving the world in which we live," says Kravet about its focus on environmentally conscious textiles that involve all-natural and sustainable yarns and recycled components.
Other industry leaders are following suit. Quebec-based Victor Innovatex is offering a line of the Eco Intelligent® fabrics, which were developed with a set of ecological guidelines by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC). What makes it intelligent? The polyester is designed for sustainability and safety. (Most polyester uses antimony trioxide, which is a potential human carcinogen.)
