Stella McCartney Spring 2010 RTW

Identifying trends only draws attention to the need for the masses to fall in when comes to uniform chic, despite the artistic license we all have to strut our stuff with individual flair.

Eco-designers are out there, in more ways than one, often pushing the envelope with fabrics and structures, making the term trend less significant than the term evolved. So check out the nearest eco-boutique and find the sustainably designed must-have that best fits you, and your lifestyle.

Looking ahead to 2010 and back over some …

Top 10 Online Eco-Boutiques

Eco-boutiques are popping up all over the web thanks to visionary retailers willing to take risks. While the debate over green consumption asks tough questions (is marketing lots of green stuff the answer to our consumerism woes?), it is clear that when it comes to eco fashion, the mantra is quality over quantity.

While some sites carry tried and true lines we’ve been following for years, others are peddling cutting edge sustainable fashion – making conscious consumption more provocative than ever.

Here’s a list of what I consider the top 10 eco boutiques. Have at ‘em!…

Customization: The Future Is Full of Clothing That Fits

sewing

I hope Mom doesn’t mind, (she’s my #1 fan) but I have to let you in on a conversation we had recently about sizing for curvier women. My mother, fully comfortable with her figure and maybe uneven sizing (bigger on the bottom than top), can’t find anything great to wear anymore so she’s taken to making her own clothes.

Luckily, I benefit as well.

She wishes more eco-designers made clothing in her size, but I told her they’re still designing for the teeny tiny woman. Most of the designs really wouldn’t look …

Leggings and Tunics – How Not to Look Pregnant

Jessica-Szor_e_1bf4e8563f0d1fa5245ddf057e56cf1b

I don’t know how many times I have women tell me they can’t wear leggings and tunics: “I look pregnant!”

While it’s true it takes a bit of finesse to avoid looking like you’re with child, leggings and tunics are a wardrobe staple and they’re not going anywhere soon.
How to wear?

First, when wearing leggings, it’s best to wear a top that can be cinched in at the waist or goes straight down to your hips. By pulling in some forced tailoring on the top, not only does it make you look trendy, …

Trend Alert – Draped & Divine

PhilipLim

From Philip Lim’s Fall 2009 RTW

One of fashion’s best design trends to enter the current style scene is the element of draping.
Some of you are fanning yourselves wondering if I’ve taken a punch to the head but I tell you, it is a gift to us.
Luscious fabric looped and laying in places you need it to camouflage abdominal imperfections, draped dramatically to show one’s décolletage or side-swept to pull away the eye from areas beyond our control.
Yes, draping.

According to the Institute of Draped Clothes, (there is one), “In the ancient …

The two symmetrical ruffles running down the front add a generous amount of girly to the comfortable Flutter Skirt. Simple and versatile, …

Interview: Prairie Underground – a Little Bit Country, a Little Bit Rock 'n Roll

spring-09-404_r2

When I first got into eco-fashion years ago, Prairie Underground was one of the firsts on my radar. I loved its fashion forward takes on everyday closet staples – not to mention that two young gals from Seattle were doing it all by themselves, from concept to manufacturing, all in Seattle. How great is that?

Prairie co-designers, Davora Lindner and Camilla Eckersley, have taken the line to new heights, creating five collections a year (yes, even a substantial summer and holiday line). Their designs are now in over 230

We Are All Worth It

What goes around comes around.

Here’s how it works:

1. You want something new in a difficult economy so you hit Marshall’s or TJ Maxx to get the Maxx for the minimum.

2. You spend $200 on a bunch of junk (albeit you have 5 new things), made in China, absolutely not eco-friendly and have taken business away from the local boutique or business run by a hard-working small business owner trying to pursue the dream of running a successful business.

3. You’ve taken away from the designer whose order is refused from the same …
