Forgive me if it seems superficial, but in my humble, fashion-forward opinion, the simple, silk sheath has much to offer today’s eco-focused woman.

The sheath dress has been around for decades – the first were worn as undergarments, followed by flappers flaunting them despite the skin-baring scandals. By the 50s, the sheath was an accepted and often worn outfit, just shorter and more form-fitting.

Today we wear them to cocktail parties and afternoon teas; belted or loose; with cap sleeves or none at all. Not to mention, the sheath is probably the most flattering style on most figures.

For example, the Rebecca Taylor Beaded Dress (above) in pure silk is eco-friendly and perfect for a spring wedding or an afternoon at the museum. Find it on sale at CUSP for $237 in sizes 0, 2 and 6.

A slightly sexier version of the sheath, the One-Shoulder Pleated Dress by Madison Marcus in plum is belted and would flatter a fuller-figure by emphasizing the waist and shoulders. It’s available on sale for $222 at CUSP, in sizes XS, M and L.

The sheath dress is the simple springtime fashion solution.
