The Firing Method: Lombok Pottery Center

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

Members of the Lombok Pottery Center in Indonesia don’t need a kiln to harden their clay creations. Instead, they utilize a much more natural firing method. After items like pots, tagines and candleholders are molded, these skilled artisans wrap them in coconut pods, bury them in the ground and burn the husks. At this point, they burnish these artworks using a blend of clay, water and oil to make the natural coloring pop and give them a polished appearance. For an intricate finishing touch, beautiful designs are carefully etched onto the surface. You can check out goods handcrafted by the Lombok Pottery Center at Ten Thousand Villages.
