Thinking Outside the Rectangle

Hello there! If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic.

The yoga mat has become as ubiquitous an accessory as the cell phone these days, even showing up in eco-friendly versions like the ones Mike showed us this spring.

But if you’re like me, you sometimes feel a bit confined on a small rectangle, practicing the movement art of liberation.

Luckily, we’ve noticed a budding trend in the realm of mass-mat making: circular yoga mats! The new generation of mats like the Fuller Movement mat allow for a more organic, natural flow of postures and a relieving sense of spaciousness – the very essence of what hatha yoga seeks to cultivate.

Lululemon also has a circular version, and we’re grateful that it’s made of a biodegradable material. The circular shape makes for a larger mat and a happier yogi!

This has been a long-standing pet peeve of mine! I can’t wait to try this mat out. :)

This is really cool! My favorite place to do yoga is in the grass, or on a blanket in the grass… so I always have plenty of space. But for a studio, a circular mat is great. Especially if you’re taking a class with Shiva Rea — she tends to move you around all over the place. Dynamic yoga!!
