5 Simple, Natural Steps to Ease IBS

flat stomach
Bloat, burning, and cramps: IBS is the worst. It’s not well understood why Irritable Bowel Syndrome happens, but it sure bugs the heck out of about 15% of the U.S. population. IBS causes abdominal pain and is linked to stress and acidic foods in the diet, but doesn’t seem to be exclusively caused by either of these. Many women suffer worse symptoms around their periods. (Here’s more information about the symptoms of IBS). Before trying the prescription drugs available for the treatment of IBS, you may want to check out some of these natural treatment options.

Take Probiotics: These are the friendly bacteria that live in your gut and aid digestion. Augmenting their numbers with natural supplements or cultured yogurt can help reduce IBS symptoms.

Eat Smaller Meals: It’s easier on digestion to eat smaller meals 4 or 5 times a day instead of the typical 3 large ones.

Reduce Irritating Foods: Yup, all the foods so prevalent in the Standard American Diet do irritate the bowels. These include alcohol, caffeine, carbonated beverages, processed foods, sugar and dairy. Fatty foods can be irritating to some women, as well. The good thing is, reducing these foods in your diet will help your general health too, not just your digestion.

Stress Management: Stress is a big trigger for IBS, so it’s very important to learn relaxation techniques like meditation. Prioritize to reduce the amount of stress in your life.

Exercise. Getting daily exercise - whether from a brisk walk, a class, or a night out dancing - will boost circulation, help your body flush toxins, and strengthen you from the inside out.

Remember, every body is different. If you have a feeling that a certain food or activity is causing you to feel IBS pain, listen to what your body is telling you. Trust your gut!
