Essential Wellness Tips for Working from Home

These days, many people, like myself, are working from home (nearly 25 million, in fact!). It’s a wonderful privilege to be as free as I please in my own home, but there’s also the tendency to blend work and life so that it feels like I never leave the office.

I’ve found a couple of tips that help keep me from falling completely into a computer vortex.

1. Before you turn the computer on, go for a brisk morning walk! It’ll get your energy flowing, but also leave your body tired enough that you won’t mind sitting down for a few hours.

2. Every so often, get up and move around. This is important! Don’t let your computer be the focal point of your entire day. Put your computer to sleep and do a few yoga postures, take a quick walk, or dance to a song in your living room.

3. Don’t eat in front of the computer. If you do, you may not chew properly or even taste your food, and you have a higher chance of overeating.

4. Set boundaries. When working from home, its important be wise and maintain limits, otherwise you might find yourself working more hours than if you went to an office or blurring professional lines. Take care of yourself and make sure you get some time outside!

5. Avoid the dark corner. If you work from home it's important to be comfortable. Use a chair and desk that are good for your posture and musculature and make sure your work area is well-lit and airy. If possible work near a window with an interesting or serene view. Work shouldn't feel like being sent to the corner. Don't ever work on your bed, as tempting as that is, or you may not be able to shut off your mind come bedtime.
